The fight to get surgeons to stop killing patients through infection closely parallels the fight to stop physicians from killing patients with sensitivities. In this article, Dr. Holmes again explains that physicians can spread puerpural fever on their hands, and that they should wash their hands before attending to births. His opponents are outraged, "Physicians are gentlemen, and gentlemen do not kill their patients," etc etc...
